Recruit Information

Tryouts: The UNCW Club Hockey Team will have tryouts each year around the beginning of September. Tryouts are open to any student currently enrolled in the university. Students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA after their first official semester at UNCW. Students must also take a minimum of 12 hours per semester. Anyone who is interested in trying out can contact us at teaminfo@uncwhockey.com or Pete Schwarz at pschwarz@brhockey.com for further information.

Try-out fees will be $20 for each player. Please bring your student ID to the first try-out date.

Player Dues: Since the University provides our team with limited funding and most or our money comes from sponsors, each person who participates on our team must pay player dues each season. Most of our budget is ice time for practices and games, which is primarily what player dues go towards. The 2008-2009 player dues will be $650 and must be paid up front, in order to participate in team functions.

Player  dues-$650, are due by September 20th.

Practices: We will have one or two practices a week. Generally the practices will be on Wednesday nights at 10:00pm. The teams practices and games will take place at the Wilmington Icehouse which is located within 10 minutes from campus. The practice schedule will remain the same throughout the semester unless notified by team officials. Players are strongly encouraged to be at every practice to further develop strategy drills for the season. Playing time for games will be effected by practice participation which will be judged by the coaching staff.

Games: The UNCW Club Ice Hockey Team plays on average a 20 game schedule. There will be a 8-10 league games spread out during the season. In addition to the league games, there will be several games against teams in the South-East area such as: East Carolina, Duke University, UNC Chapel-Hill, Clemson University and Salisbury University, just to name a few. Home games will be played on Friday and Saturday nights at 10:00pm and 4:30pm respectively. The Seahawks will have 2-3 travel weekends per semester and will use vans for transportation to games and will stay at local hotels for the evening.

Equipment: Every member will be expected to provide their own equipment. The UNCW Club Hockey Team will supply players with game jerseys and socks. Equipment must match therefore we will be wearing black pants and black helmets. In addition mouth guards are required for play in the BRHC.

The University of North Carolina @ Wilmington:

The UNCW campus is located only 10 minutes from the beach as well as downtown historic Wilmington. The University is passionate and focused on engaged teaching, where learning and research matter. Students consistently praise the quality of their interactions with faculty and express satisfaction with their overall educational experience. The faculty culture emphasizes teaching and mentoring, incorporating research as an important component of the undergraduate learning experience and a service to the state. UNCW offers 73 bachelor’s degree programs and 27 graduate programs, which include a Ph.D. in marine biology, one of only three offered on the East Coast. For the ninth year, UNCW was seventh among the top public master’s universities in the South by U.S.News & World Report. Among both public and private institutions in the South, UNCW is 20th out of 127 institutions. UNCW’s strength in the natural sciences, especially biological sciences, chemistry and other disciplines that form the core of our internationally respected niche in the marine sciences, is the result of decades of intentional focus and investment.  - Information taken from the UNCW website: www.uncw.edu.
